Clippers’ Eric Gordon leaves a big void to fill

A few weeks without leading scorer Eric Gordon must mean a bigger need for more from Blake Griffin.

Uh, not exactly.

“I don’t know if we can go to Blake much more than we do already,” Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro said Tuesday.

It’s going to take a collective effort, and then some. The loss of Gordon looms large and cast a shadow over an already troubled Clippers season. The shooting guard could be out until after the All-Star break because of an injured wrist.

Not only is it sprained but there is an issue of a small bone chip fracture.

Rookie point guard Eric Bledsoe spoke about the loss of Gordon and what it meant to Griffin.

“He helps Blake out,” Bledsoe said. “So we just need somebody to help Blake out. I think somebody will step up. I think it will probably be Baron [Davis] or somebody off the bench.”

Randy Foye started in place of Gordon and Rasual Butler got in his playing time since he was in for a couple of minutes in a Dec. 27 game at Sacramento. Butler played 19-plus minutes off the bench, scoring two points, and Foye had 15 points and hit two three-pointers.

But the bulk of the responsibility will fall on Davis.

“He’s our scorer. He’s our motor,” Davis said of Gordon. “And one of our good, lock-down defenders. It is tough playing without one of the best players you have on the team. We’ve got guys we believe in here.

“They are going to step up and assume a role from the perimeter. I may have to look to score a little bit more as well. We’ve got to put together the pieces.

“It’s a big piece missing. We’ve just got to go out and have the resolve of trying to win these basketball games.”
