St. Bonaventure trains its focus on Westlake
Not long after 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Ventura St. Bonaventure Coach Todd Therrien decided to stop watching video and go to sleep. And he wasn’t watching video from the Seraphs’ 60-7 triumph over Calabasas on Friday night.
His focus was on unbeaten Westlake Village Westlake (9-0), the Seraphs’ opponent Thursday night at Moorpark College in a game that will decide the Marmonte League championship. All this week, instead of preparing for Calabasas, St. Bonaventure players and coaches were studying video of Westlake.
“They’re a championship-level football team at all levels,” Therrien said. “Everything you want from a football team, they have. A strong offensive and defensive line, a great kicking game, a good running game, and to top it off, they have a quarterback who’s won a championship.”
Therrien talks as if St. Bonaventure (8-1) will just show up and be satisfied with being on the same field as the Warriors. Not quite.
“We’ve been to Corona Centennial,” he said. “We’ve been to Veterans Stadium and beaten Long Beach Poly. We’ve been in big games. We live for big games.”
St. Bonaventure is getting healthy. Expected to return from injuries for the Westlake game are standout lineman David Barajas and receiver Montre Lee.
JSerra shows life
A year ago, San Juan Capistrano JSerra didn’t win a single Trinity League game at the varsity, junior varsity or freshman levels. On Thursday, the Lions won their second Trinity League game in varsity history, 31-14, over Orange Lutheran.
Add the fact that the freshman team is 9-0, and it could be a sign the football program is finally headed in the right direction. The school opened in 2003.
“It was significant for us to get a varsity win against a good program,” Coach Jim Hartigan said. “We played well and got stronger as the game went on. It all came together.”
Senior linebacker Keith Parker led the team’s victory by forcing a fumble and making two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown.
In the zone
Senior Mario Smith of Costa Mesa rushed for 359 yards and seven touchdowns in a 63-47 victory over Laguna Beach.
Senior Dejon Coleman of Arleta raised his season touchdown total to 42 after scoring six touchdowns and rushing for 192 yards in a 47-2 win over Sun Valley.
