Jets’ Rex Ryan is fined $75,000 by the NFL

Coach Rex Ryan of the New York Jets on Monday was fined $75,000 by the NFL for screaming an obscenity at a spectator.

Ryan made the foul-mouthed remark during halftime of the Jets’ loss to New England on Nov. 13 at MetLife Stadium after a spectator suggested that Patriots Coach Bill Belichick is superior to Ryan at his job.

As Ryan walked into the tunnel minutes after the Jets gave up an 80-yard touchdown drive, a spectator yelled, “Hey, Rex, Belichick is better than you.”

Ryan responded with an obscenity, a reaction he said he regretted.

“I won’t appeal it,” Ryan said, adding that he had recently spoken with Commissioner Roger Goodell to apologize for the incident. “The commissioner has got a tough enough job. I’m an NFL lifer and I know I represent the NFL, and I represent the Jets. So I’m accountable for my actions and I will not appeal it.”

Titan’s Matt Hasselbeck checks out OK

Tennessee Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has no structural damage to his right forearm and elbow, but whether he plays against Tampa Bay will be determined by how comfortable he is throwing the ball.

Coach Mike Munchak said that tests were negative and that Hasselbeck’s injury is more of a muscle strain in the forearm. Hasselbeck was injured during the Titans’ 23-17 loss in Atlanta when he hit his arm on a defender’s helmet.

Packers’ James Starks has sprained knee

Running back James Starks has a sprained knee and a sore ankle, and the Green Bay Packers aren’t sure whether they’ll have him back in time for their Thanksgiving Day game at Detroit.

Starks injured the knee late in the fourth quarter of the Packers’ victory over Tampa Bay on Sunday. The Packers did not practice Monday.

Coach Mike McCarthy said the injury isn’t as bad as it appeared to be initially, and is holding out hope that Starks might be able to practice Tuesday.

49ers’ Dashon Goldson addresses incident

San Francisco 49ers safety Dashon Goldson insists his fight with Arizona receiver Early Doucet was a one-time transgression and said he addressed his teammates and coaches after the team’s 23-7 victory over the Cardinals.

At the end of a play early in the fourth quarter, Goldson was down away from the ball when he was blindsided and slapped on the back of the helmet by Doucet. Goldson jumped up and confronted Doucet, and they began swinging wildly. Goldson threw punches to Doucet’s facemask and received a 15-yard personal foul penalty before being ejected.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league doesn’t plan to suspend Goldson, who will get word on a potential fine when fines are handed down Friday.

Lions-Saints game moves to prime time

The Dec. 4 game between the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints will be played on “Sunday Night Football” on NBC. The Indianapolis Colts-New England Patriots matchup was originally in that slot, but the NFL previously announced it was shifting that matchup to earlier in the day under the league’s flexible scheduling policy.

Also in Week 13, the Baltimore Ravens-Cleveland Browns game moves to 1 p.m. PST on CBS, and the Denver Broncos-Minnesota Vikings game shifts to 10 a.m. on Fox. CBS usually handles all away games for AFC teams, but the league has made an unprecedented move by switching that telecast to Fox.

The switch was done because Fox would have had only two early games that Sunday and CBS would have had seven. The breakdown now is three and six. The NFL can use flex scheduling to ensure meaningful matchups Sunday night starting in Week 10.
