Kings place Drew Doughty on injured reserve

Share

The Kings placed defenseman Drew Doughty on injured reserve Sunday as the result of an apparent shoulder injury that’s expected to keep him out of the lineup at least seven to 10 days.

To fill Doughty’s spot, the Kings recalled defenseman Slava Voynov from Manchester (N.H.) of the American Hockey League. Voynov, who has not made his NHL debut, was expected to arrive in time for the Kings’ practice Monday in El Segundo. They play the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, their Staples Center opener.

Doughty was injured Saturday on a hard, open-ice hit by Flyers forward Zac Rinaldo during his first shift of the Kings’ 3-2 overtime victory at Philadelphia. Doughty appeared dazed and seemed to flex and favor his shoulder when he returned to the bench. He played one more shift in the first period but was held out of the remainder of the game.

The Kings, permitted by the NHL to be vague about injuries, are saying only that the injury is to Doughty’s upper body. That initially triggered fears that Doughty, who suffered a concussion last season, might have another head injury. However, General Manager Dean Lombardi told The Times on Saturday that the injury is not to Doughty’s head.

Doughty, 21, had one assist and was minus-one defensively in four games. He missed nearly all of training camp while negotiating a contract that will pay him $56 million over eight seasons, the highest average annual salary on the team.

Voynov had an impressive training camp but was squeezed out of a job by the Kings’ depth and experience on defense. He had a goal, two points and a plus-five defensive rating in two games with Manchester.

Etc.

Starting Tuesday and at every home game in October, the Kings’ wives will sell silicone prayer bracelets to benefit families of players killed in the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team plane crash in Russia. Bracelets will be sold behind section 103 at a cost of $10 for adults and $5 for children.
