Riverside North’s Leonard De Coud is girls’ coach of the year

When Leonard De Coud took the head coaching job at Riverside North this year, he took over a girls’ program that had finished last season with a dismal record of 4-21.

He quickly transformed the Huskies into completely different team by turning a group of players who had trouble getting along into a cohesive unit.

This season, the Huskies had a 31-6 record and were finalists in the State Division II championship. And for that effort, De Coud was named girls’ coach of the year by The Times.

“It was a lot of hard work and the girls bought into what I was trying to do,” De Coud said. “They liked what we were doing and they became friends this year. Last year, they were fighting among each other.”

De Coud led the Huskies to their first Southern California Regional championship and their first state championship appearance.

They finished second in the Big VIII League and were runners-up for the Southern Section Division 2AA championship.
