Champions repeat beach volleyball titles at Manhattan Beach Open

At the Manhattan Beach Open this year, an adage proved true: different year, same result.

Sean Scott and John Hyden repeated as the men’s champions of the professional beach volleyball event Sunday, and Jenny Kropp and Whitney Pavlik did the same on the women’s side.

Both teams won the event, which is part of the Jose Cuervo Professional Beach Volleyball Series, for the first time last year. Because of those wins, their names were engraved on a plaque that was put on the Manhattan Beach Pier’s Volleyball Walk of Fame during a ceremony Friday.

And two days later, each team — Scott and Hyden were seeded No. 3 among the 32 men’s teams, and Kropp and Pavlik were top-seeded in the women’s 32-team draw — repeated as tournament champions.

The winning teams each received $11,000.

“This shows that the first year wasn’t a fluke,” Hyden said after he and Scott beat eighth-seeded Ryan Doherty and Casey Patterson, 21-13, 21-17.

Added Scott: “This one is a lot sweeter to me.”

Hyden and Scott dispatched Doherty and Patterson with relative ease, especially with Scott’s fearsome presence at the net. He finished with a match-high six blocks, swaying the outcome.

London Olympians Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal were the top-seeded men’s team but lost to fifth-seeded Billy Allen and Matt Prosser in a quarterfinal Sunday.

Like Scott, Kropp was a force at the net as she and Pavlik beat third-seeded Jennifer Fopma and Brooke Sweat, 21-17, 21-16. Kropp finished with a match-high four blocks.

“It’s a hard feat to do and I’m so proud of us for doing it,” Kropp said of earning a second consecutive win at the event, considered the crown jewel of beach volleyball.

“Having the presentation [Friday], being honored, you just want it so much after that.”

The two teams have dominated the Jose Cuervo series this year. Scott and Hyden have won four of the six events, and Kropp and Pavlik have won five. Kropp and Pavlik finished third in Milwaukee this month.

“I think Milwaukee definitely fired us up,” said Pavlik, who had a match-high 12 kills. “It really showed us some things we had to work on leading up to this tournament. We talked about what we needed to improve on. And we took care of business.”

Both teams said they plan to play in the next large domestic event, the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals’ Open in Cincinnati from Aug. 31 to Sept. 2.
