Brandon Jacobs, suspended by 49ers, had more tweets than carries

Brandon Jacobs has done a lot of complaining on social media lately about his lack of playing time with the San Francisco 49ers, saying on one site, “I am on this team rotting away.”

That’s no longer the case. The 49ers announced Monday that the running back has been suspended for the remaining three games of the regular season. No official reason was given for the move.

Jacobs spent the first seven years of his career with the New York Giants, winning two Super Bowl rings in the process. His 4,849 yards are the fourth-best in team history, but his role diminished with the emergence of Ahmad Bradshaw.

Jacobs came to San Francisco as a free agent during the off-season, joining an already crowded backfield that included three-time Pro Bowler Frank Gore. A left knee injury hampered him early in the season, and by the time he was ready to play Coach Jim Harbaugh had already settled on a rotation that did not include him.

With just five carries for seven yards this season, Jacobs spent approximately 20 minutes before games punching the goal-post padding, saying it is his way of dealing with the situation. He also vented through social media, with his recent activity including posting a series of photos from his days with the Giants.

“I am on this team rotting away so why would I wanna put any pics up of anything that say niners,” Jacobs said in an Instagram post Saturday. “This is by far the worst year I ever had, I’ll tell you like I told plenty others.”

Later he wrote on Twitter: “I don’t understand why people are angry at me because I wanna do what I am paid to do, I am a competitive person, I think people should be mad if I didn’t wanna play. … As for all of my Instagram photos I don’t have any niner pics, if you’ll find me some pics I’ll put them up.”

Jacobs returned to social media Monday after his suspension was announced. But this time his tone was a bit different.

“Thank you all for all your support,” he tweeted. “I am doing wonderful it’s not a big deal things happen, I am strong enough to get through this, again thank all of you for your support. #IWILLBEBACK.”
