Greg McElroy to start for Jets over Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow

Mark Sanchez will be on the sideline when the New York Jets play their final home game of the season on Sunday.

And standing right next to the former starting quarterback could very well be supposed No. 2 QB Tim Tebow.

Calling the signals for the Jets against the San Diego Chargers will be former third-stringer Greg McElroy, who apparently leapfrogged over Tebow to take over as starter for the now-benched Sanchez.

McElroy, a seventh-round pick last year out of Alabama, has made just one appearance in an NFL game, coming in for a struggling Sanchez late in the third quarter against the Arizona Cardinals on Dec. 2 and leading the Jets to a 7-6 victory. Tebow was injured at the time.

Coach Rex Ryan stuck with Sanchez as his starter, but another miserable performance Monday night -- four interceptions and a fumbled snap in a 14-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans that eliminated the Jets from playoff contention -- apparently was the last straw.

Sanchez has a league-high 24 turnovers, including 17 interceptions, and has lost the ball 50 times since the start of last season. Tebow, who led the Denver Broncos to a playoff victory last year, has seen little playing time since being acquired by the Jets in an off-season trade.
