J.R. Smith’s shot at buzzer gives Knicks 99-97 win over Suns

J.R. Smith sank a baseline 21-footer at the buzzer after a Phoenix turnover with a second to play, giving the depleted New York Knicks a 99-97 victory over the host Suns on Wednesday night.

Smith’s tough jumper from 15 feet had tied it at 97 with 10.6 seconds left. Then, after the turnover, Jason Kidd inbounded to Smith, who got the shot off as he sailed toward the out-of-bounds line. Smith scored 27 and Kidd added 23.

Jared Dudley had a career-high 36 points for Phoenix, including two free throws that put the Suns ahead 97-95 with 34.5 seconds to go.

New York was without the NBA’s No. 2 scorer Carmelo Anthony (hyperextended knee) and Raymond Felton (sprained finger), both hurt in the Christmas Day loss to the Lakers.

The Knicks said X-rays on Felton’s right fifth finger revealed a fracture and the next course of action will be determined after his return to New York.

The Suns lost Goran Dragic in the final seconds of the first half when he was undercut by Smith on a layup attempt and fell hard to the floor. Dragic had bruises to his hip, back and wrist. Smith was called for a flagrant foul on the play.

Chris Copeland and Tyson Chandler added 14 points apiece for the Knicks.

Miami 105, at Charlotte 92: LeBron James had 27 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists and the Heat won its sixth in a row while handing the Bobcats their 16th straight defeat. Dwyane Wade scored 29 points for Miami.

Houston 87, at Minnesota 84: James Harden scored 17 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter and the Rockets rallied to win their fifth game in a row. Harden’s drive to the basket gave Houston an 85-84 lead with 39 seconds left. He scored 15 of the Rockets’ final 17 points.

Philadelphia 99, at Memphis 89: Dorell Wright scored 28 points and Spencer Hawes had 20, season-highs for both, and the 76ers snapped a road losing streak at six games. Zach Randolph led the Grizzlies with 23 points and nine rebounds.

Golden State 94, at Utah 83: Stephen Curry scored the Warriors’ first 11 points and finished with 23 and David Lee added 18. Golden State had a 75-58 lead into the fourth quarter.

at San Antonio 100, Toronto 80: Tim Duncan scored 15 points and the Spurs stopped the Raptors’ winning streak at five games.

at Atlanta 126, Detroit 119 (2 OT): Josh Smith scored 31 points, Al Horford added 22 and the Hawks won in double overtime after blowing a 22-point lead in the fourth quarter.

at Portland 109, Sacramento 91: LaMarcus Aldridge had 28 points and 12 rebounds and the Trail Blazers led by as many as 26 points.

Cleveland 87, at Washington 84: Tristan Thompson’s three-point play with 24.4 seconds remaining gave the Cavaliers their first two-game winning streak of the season. Kyrie Irving had 20 of his 26 points in the first half for Cleveland.

at Milwaukee 108, Brooklyn 93: Brandon Jennings scored 25 points, Monta Ellis added 20 points and the Bucks beat the Nets for the 13th straight time. Brooklyn’s Deron Williams did not play after injuring his wrist Tuesday against Boston.

Chicago at Indiana, postponed: The game between the Pacers and Bulls was postponed a few hours before the scheduled tip-off by a snowstorm that hit the Indianapolis area. No date has been set for rescheduling the game.
