U.S. Swimming: Fire alarm awakens Michael Phelps, Dana Vollmer
The common routine for championship swimmers: preliminaries in the morning, sleep in the afternoon, finals in the evening.
For Michael Phelps and a host of other American hopefuls, that routine was rudely disrupted Monday -- by a fire alarm.
“Well I have always had a prob with waking up from naps ... But not possible to sleep through that fire alarm...” Phelps posted on Twitter on Monday afternoon.
Dana Vollmer posted a picture of swimmers stranded outside the hotel, gathered near a freeway underpass.
“Fire alarm at the hilton woke us all up from our naps,” she tweeted. “Everyone is sittin outside now :( “
Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals in Beijing, takes on rival Ryan Lochte in the 400 individual medley Monday night. The top two finishers become the first two members of the U.S. Olympic swim team.
Vollmer set an Olympic trials record in Monday morning’s prelims of the 100 butterfly. She finished fifth in that event at the 2008 trials. The semifinals of the event are set for Monday night, with the finals set for Tuesday night.
