Dodgers beat White Sox in exhibition opener

Dodgers 6, Chicago White Sox 4

At the plate: The Dodgers had six hits in a five-run sixth inning that broke open the game. Four of the hits were by sons of former major leaguers, who combined for the cycle in the inning. “That’s crazy,” Scott Van Slyke said. Tony Gwynn Jr. singled, Justin Sellers doubled, Ivan De Jesus Jr. tripled and Van Slyke hit a towering two-run home run that cleared the Dodgers’ bullpen in left field. The Dodgers started their projected opening-day lineup, except for third baseman Juan Uribe, who will start Tuesday. Andre Ethier, who had a minor knee operation last fall, doubled down the right-field line and had no problems reaching second base.

On the mound: Chad Billingsley pitched two scoreless innings, limiting the White Sox to one hit and facing only seven batters. “My main focus was throwing strikes,” said Billingsley, who added that he threw his curveball and changeup in addition to his fastball. He said he made slight changes to his delivery. “It’s feeling better,” Billingsley said. “Today was a good day. You want to build off this.” Rookie Nathan Eovaldi was charged with a run, two hits and two walks over 1 2/3 innings.

Extra bases: Of defeating White Sox rookie Manager Robin Ventura, second-year Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly laughed and said, “That’s what he gets. Rookie.” . . . Mark Sweeney, a special assistant to General Manager Ned Colletti, has left the Dodgers to pursue other opportunities in baseball.

Up next: Ted Lilly faces the San Francisco Giants and Barry Zito at noon PST Tuesday at Camelback Ranch.

On the air: Radio: 570.
