Top West Coast Kentucky Derby contender Out of Bounds is injured
Out of Bounds, one of the most promising 3-year-olds on the West Coast, suffered a fractured left ankle during a workout on Monday at Hollywood Park, taking him out of contention to run in the Kentucky Derby, the Daily Racing Form reported.
Out of Bounds was scheduled to run on Saturday in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita, a final prep for the Santa Anita Derby.
Out of Bounds won the Sham Stakes on Jan. 7. He’s expected to undergo surgery.
Trainer Eoin Harty said he noticed something wrong about 20 minutes into the colt’s cooling out period following “an exceptional workout” at Hollywood Park.
Harty added that the horse’s prognosis is excellent.
