Angels’ rally comes up short in 6-4 loss to Mariners

Tempe, Ariz. -- Seattle broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the seventh inning, three off 7-foot-1 right-hander Loek Van Mil, en route to a 6-4 exhibition victory over the Angels in Tempe Diablo Stadium on Wednesday.

Vinnie Catricala added a two-run home run in the eighth for the Mariners. The Angels scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, two on 20-year-old second-base prospect Taylor Lindsey’s two-run triple.

After retiring the side in order in the first inning, Angels starter Jered Weaver gave up three singles in the second before getting Luis Rodriguez to fly to center with the bases loaded to end the inning. Weaver threw all fastballs and changeups during a 34-pitch, 20-strike stint.

“It felt good,” Weaver said. “You’re not really worried about where the pitches are going the first start of spring, just trying to get into the flow of a game again, get your timing down. Got a little tired at the end, but that’s normal.”

Closer Jordan Walden followed Weaver on the mound and threw a scoreless third inning, yielding one infield single and striking out Kyle Seager.

The Angels scored their first run in the seventh when Peter Bourjos tripled to left-center and came home on Hank Conger’s grounder to second.
