Hines Ward announces his retirement after 14 years with Steelers

Pro Bowl receiver Hines Ward announced his retirement Tuesday after 14 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The news came at a tear-filled press conference at Steelers headquarters attended by Coach Mike Tomlin, General Manager Kevin Colbert, team President Art Rooney II, and former teammates Jerome Bettis and Aaron Smith, among others.

“I will remain a Steeler for life,” said Ward, who retired with 1,000 receptions and 85 touchdowns. He was widely considered the best blocking receiver in the game.

Ward was asked what’s next for him.

“I’m excited to close this chapter,” he said, according to CBSSports.com. “I’m excited about whatever happens in the next part. Who knows, maybe Mike Tomlin will have me as an assistant coach. Even though he doesn’t think I’ll be a great coach.”

Tomlin laughed at that.
