Tim Tebow or Mark Sanchez: Who should start for the Jets? [Poll]

Share

Tim Tebow is now a member of the New York Jets, a team that recently signed Mark Sanchez to a three-year contract extension. That means the Jets’ roster now includes two quarterbacks who were starters in 2011.

That could turn into quite a dilemma for Coach Rex Ryan. So let’s try to help him out.

First, let’s take a look at what he’s getting in Tebow. In 11 games as Denver’s starter last season, Tebow went 7-4 to help salvage the season for a team that started 1-4. He had 18 touchdowns (12 passing, six rushing) and 660 rushing yards. But he was pretty shaky as a passer, throwing for 1,729 yards with a 46.5 completion percentage (but only six interceptions).

And then there’s Tebowmania, with the large legion of fans who never fail to offer their favorite quarterback their unconditional (and very vocal) support. Just ask former Denver quarterback Kyle Orton, now with the Kansas City Chiefs, about those guys.

Which brings us to Sanchez, who lived a charmed life in taking the Jets to the AFC championship in each of his first two years in the league. But any goodwill that he had built up during those years faded quickly last season as the Jets stumbled to an 8-8 record and failed to make the playoffs.

Sanchez threw for 3,474 yards and a career-high 26 touchdowns, but the also-vocal New York fans were not impressed, especially considering Sanchez’s 18 interceptions and 56.7 completion percentage. So even if the Jets plan to use Tebow as a backup or in special packages, there could be a quarterback controversy brewing in New York.

Who do you think should be the Jets’ starting quarterback in 2012? Vote in the poll, then leave a comment explaining why you voted the way you did.
