Clippers guard Mo Williams is on crutches after toe injury

The Clippers’ sparkplug reserve guard Mo Williams will be out of commission indefinitely with an injured left big toe, Coach Vinny Del Negro said Saturday.

“It’s going to be a little bit,” Del Negro said. “I don’t know exactly. We got good results back that there isn’t a tear or anything like that. It’s a pain-tolerance thing. It’s very painful. He’s going to get a lot of therapy.”

Williams, who wore a boot and was walking on crutches, was expected to see a specialist on Saturday for the injury he suffered in Thursday’s loss to the New Orleans Hornets.

Williams is fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 13.6 points, and recently acquired guard Nick Young is expected to fill Williams’ role off the bench. Young scored 16 points in that position in the 101-85 win against Memphis.

Bobby Simmons is re-signed

The Clippers re-signed free agent guard Bobby Simmons for the remainder of the season. He had been signed to a pair of 10-day contracts with the team but hadn’t received another offer after his deal expired last Sunday.

Simmons averaged 3.5 points in a 13-game stint with the team before he was re-signed.

“Bobby did a great job for us when he was here,” Del Negro said. “He didn’t shoot the basketball well, but great locker room guy, good team defender, can play some [small forward], some [power forward], stretch the court, open it up. He helped us when he was here. So obviously with Mo [Williams] going down and things, it just made sense.”

Simmons made a buzzer-beating three-point shot at the end of the first quarter against Memphis to cap a 12-0 run and give his team a 16-point lead.

Hornets forward apologizes for foul against Griffin

New Orleans Hornets forward Jason Smith released a statement apologizing for a hard foul against the Clippers’ Blake Griffin in the fourth quarter of Thursday’s game.

Smith was called for a flagrant foul two and ejected. Smith was also suspended for two games, meaning he will not play against the Clippers when the teams meet at Staples Center on Monday.

“Not only do I want to express my sincere apology to Blake Griffin and the Clippers organization, but also to all basketball fans that might have the impression from seeing the play, that it’s okay to go beyond playing aggressive and attempt to injure someone during the course of a game,” Smith’s statement said in part.

Smith threw his body into Griffin while the Clippers forward was driving to the basket. The blow sent Griffin tumbling to the ground.

Coincidentally, Memphis guard O.J. Mayo was called for a flagrant foul one after lowering his shoulder into a driving Griffin late in the third quarter, causing Griffin to fall.
