Kings fail to close out Coyotes, losing 2-0 in Game 4

Now the Kings will feel some heat.

Not so much in the Western Conference finals. They still have a 3-1 series lead on Phoenix. But the Coyotes’ 2-0 victory at Staples Center on Sunday afternoon sent things back to the sweltering desert for Game 5 on Tuesday, where life will be a less-than-comfy 106 degrees, according to accuweather.com.

Shane Doan’s two goals will force the Kings to sweat out one more game, spoiling Sunday’s coronation plans that had even brought owner Philip Anschutz out of hiding. Anschutz, the recluse head of AEG, was in attendance but all he witnessed was the Kings’ playoff winning streak ending at eight games.

The Campbell Bowl -- given to the Western Conference champion -- was packed off to Phoenix to join the two teams.

The Kings, who lost for only the second time at home during the playoffs, sent 36 shots at goaltender Mike Smith. He stopped each one, making Doan’s offensive outburst insurmountable.

Doan’s first goal ended the Kings’ penalty killing streak at 30.

With Justin Williams sent off for goaltender interference, Doan walked in from the corner with the puck and slipped a backhanded shot past goaltender Jonathan Quick for a 1-0 lead 14:19 into the first period.

The Kings had a handful of chances to tie the score in the second period. Trevor Lewis hit the post two minutes into the period. Two minutes later, Anze Kopitar tapped the puck on a rebound, sliding it past Smith, who managed to reach back to get his glove on it at the last second, redirecting it wide.

Doan gave the Coyotes some breathing room about halfway into the second period. Ray Whitney won a faceoff to the left of the Kings’ goal and Doan got a clear shot that beat Quick for a 2-0 lead when it ricocheted off the camera inside the net 11:10 into the second period.
