Melky Cabrera reportedly agrees to $16-million deal with Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays are becoming baseball’s most intriguing team. They opened the week by stripping the high-priced talent from the Miami Marlins, and they closed the week by adding baseball’s most notorious drug cheat last season.

The Jays agreed to a two-year, $16-million contract with outfielder Melky Cabrera, ESPN Deportes reported Friday.

Cabrera would have won the National League batting title had he not forfeited the title in an effort to repair his image after failing a drug test and trying to link the test result to a tainted supplement via a phony website. The San Francisco Giants refused to reinstate him even after his 50-game suspension expired, and the Giants won the World Series with journeyman Gregor Blanco replacing Cabrera in left field.

Cabrera, 28, batted .346 with a .906 OPS for the Giants last season, by far the highest figures in his eight-year career. He won the most valuable player award in the All-Star Game, with the NL victory providing the Giants with home-field advantage in the World Series in which they would not let him play.
