Rory McIlroy shares lead in Dubai

Rory McIlroy moved to the top of the leaderboard with a five-under 67 Friday in the second round of the Dubai World Championship in the United Arab Emirates.

The top-ranked golfer, who missed several makable putts on the front nine and then had an eagle putt roll past the hole on No. 14, tied Luke Donald (68) and Marc Warren (67) at 11-under 133. Sergio Garcia, playing for the first time since having laser eye surgery, matched the course record with an eight-under 64.

Garcia started with four birdies on his first five holes and then had a string of birdies at the turn before holing a long putt for eagle on No. 14. But he shot into the water on No. 16 for a triple-bogey before recovering to finish with a birdie and eagle.

Mother plans to take Camacho off life support

The mother of Hector “Macho” Camacho plans to have the former championship boxer taken off life support Saturday, after three more of his sons arrive in Puerto Rico to be with him. Maria Matias said Friday night she made the decision to have doctors remove him from life support. The boxer’s oldest son says he opposes the decision. Matias says three more of the boxer’s sons will arrive in Puerto Rico and will get to see him for the last time on Saturday. She says her son “died three days ago and he’s only alive now because of a machine.” The former world champion was shot in the face Tuesday night in his Puerto Rican hometown of Bayamon.

Brazil fires soccer coach

Brazil’s soccer federation has fired national team coach Mano Menezes. Federation director Andres Sanchez said he didn’t agree with the decision but that federation president Jose Maria Marin made a “bold” change because he “wants new methods and new planning” for the 2014 World Cup that Brazil will host. ... U.S national team player Jose Francisco Torres has switched clubs in Mexico’s first division, going to the Tigres from Pachuca. ... South Africa spent more than $3 billion on the 2010 World Cup, and in return gained an “intangible legacy” from the first world soccer showpiece in Africa, the country’s government said in its final report on the tournament.

Japan’s Asada leads skaters

Japan’s Mao Asada received a season-best 67.95 points to finish first in the women’s figure skating short program at the NHK Trophy competition at Sendai, Japan, and Mirai Nagasu of the United States was second with 61.18. In the men’s short program, Japanese teenager Yuzuru Hanyu received a world-record score of 95.32, bettering his mark of 95.07, set last month at Skate America. ... Although weakened by a bad stomach bug, four-time overall World Cup champion Lindsey Vonn will race in the women’s giant slalom Saturday and then skip the slalom Sunday to conserve energy. ... At Whistler, Canada, Germany’s Marion Thees won a World Cup women’s skeleton race, finishing with a two-run time of 1 minute 50.92 seconds. Thees took the lead in the season standings, 32 points ahead of American Katie Uhlaender.
