Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has more in the tank, wins Nationwide race

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. came back from two laps down Saturday to win the Nationwide Series race at Kansas Speedway, in Kansas City, Kan.

The race was extended six laps because of a late caution, which helped Stenhouse grab his sixth win of the season because the cars in front of him didn’t have enough gas to make it to the finish.

Sam Hornish Jr. ran out of fuel before the planned restart, which extended the caution period another lap. As the field came to the green, Paul Menard ran out gas.

Kyle Busch then pulled away from the field, but his tank ran dry as he exited the third turn of the final lap.

Stenhouse, who had lined up in fourth on the restart, zipped past for the victory.

Davis Love III, Jim Furyk lead McGladrey Classic

Three weeks after they were on stage together for the closing ceremony at the Ryder Cup, Davis Love III and Jim Furyk wound up together in the final pairing at the McGladrey Classic at St. Simons Island, Ga.

Love made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole Saturday for a four-under 66, giving him a share of the lead with Furyk, who also had a 66 by doing most of his work early. He made a 45-foot birdie putt over a slight ridge on the second hole, added three more birdies through six holes, and settled for eight pars at the end.

They were at 13-under 197, two shots clear of Arjun Atwal (69) and D.J. Trahan (66), two players who could avoid a return to Q-school with a big week at Sea Island.

Suzann Pettersen shot a four-under 68 to extend her lead to five strokes after the second round of the LPGA Tour’s HanaBank Championship at Incheon, South Korea.

The Norwegian was 13 under on Sky 72 Golf Club’s Ocean Course. She opened with a course-record 63.

South Korea’s So Yeon Ryu was second after a 70. Top-ranked Yani Tseng, the defending champion, was seven under along with Germany’s Sandra Gal and South Korea’s Se Ri Pak. Pak had a 67, Gal shot 68, and Tseng 70.

Bo Van Pelt shot a five-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead over fellow American Jason Dufner after the third round of the Perth International in Australia.

Van Pelt had a 12-under 204 total at Lake Karrinyup. Dufner also had a 67,

Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo, the second-round leader, was 10 under after a 73.

The New Orleans Saints moved linebacker Jonathan Vilma from their physically unable to perform list to the active roster, meaning he could play for the first time this season Sunday at Tampa Bay. However, tight end Jimmy Graham will not play because of his sprained right ankle.

Junior Sarah Baxter of Simi Valley set a course record on Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College, winning the girls’ team sweepstakes race of the Mt. SAC Invitational in 16:00, a performance some longtime observers are calling is one of the best ever by a high school athlete.

Baxter has won the last two state championships and hasn’t lost a high school race.

The old record was 16:16 set in 2001.

Venus Williams reached her first final in almost 21/2 years at the Luxembourg Open after defeating Andrea Petkovic of Germany, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

Williams, hampered for two seasons by injuries and an autoimmune disease, will play Monica Niculescu of Romania in the final on Sunday.

Niculescu,25, has yet to win her first WTA title; Williams has won 43 singles titles overall, including seven at Grand Slams. Her last was in February 2010 in Acapulco.

Niculescu, ranked 70th, reached her second straight Luxembourg Open final by beating Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, 6-1, 6-3.

Caroline Wozniacki and Samantha Stosur both earned three-set victories on Saturday to reach the final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

Wozniacki advanced to her third final of the season by beating Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4. Stosur rallied past former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tomas Berdych will play in the Stockholm Open final after semifinal wins on Saturday.

Top-seeded Tsonga advanced after his opponent Marcos Baghdatis retired with a left groin strain in the deciding set, with Tsonga leading, 6-4, 4-6, 5-2.

Berdych recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win over Nicolas Almagro of Spain.

Representatives of the NHL and the players’ association had contact on Saturday but they did not schedule any negotiating sessions, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. The league, which locked players out on Sept. 15, has canceled scheduled games through Nov. 1.
