Chivas USA’s front office makeover begins with new team president

Nearly two months after an ownership change the long-anticipated restructuring of the Chivas USA front office began late Tuesday with the appointment of Jose David to the team’s presidency and the naming of Jose Luis Real as supervisor of soccer operations.

Real is a longtime confidant of Jorge Vergara who, along with his wife, Angelica Fuentes, owns the Mexican League team Chivas de Guadalajara. In August, Vergara and Fuentes also became sole owners of Chivas USA after buying out former partners Antonio and Lorenzo Cua.

Following the ownership change Vergara and Fuentes instituted a media blackout, refusing to talk about their plans for the long-struggling team they helped to found.

David, a Mexican-born businessman who has lived the last seven years in Los Angeles, will replace Antonio Cue as the team’s top front-office executive. Real, currently the director of development for Chivas de Guadalajara, will oversee Chivas USA’s on-field operations.

Many of Real’s responsibilities formerly belonged to General Manager Jose Domene, who a team spokesman said will now report to Real.

Real, who also oversaw Chivas de Guadalajara’s highly successful youth academy after a long playing career in Mexico, will continue to live primarily in Guadalajara.

Chivas will finish the Major League Soccer season Sunday on the road against FC Dallas. At 7-18-8, Chivas needs a win to avoid finishing with the fewest victories since its inaugural season in 2005. The team is already assured of finishing last in the Western Conference for the second time in three seasons.
