Kansas State’s Collin Klein on a speedy streak

Collin Klein is already in fast company, and if he and Kansas State keep rolling, he could keep a streak going.

Klein, a senior, is one of only four quarterbacks since 1998, the dawn of the Bowl Championship Series era, who have passed for 10 touchdowns and run for 20 in the same season. He did it last season, when he passed for 13 and ran for 27.

The other three who have done it: Eric Crouch of Nebraska, Tim Tebow of Florida and Cam Newton of Auburn — all Heisman Trophy winners.

Crouch passed for 11 touchdowns and ran for 20 in 2000, the year before he won the Heisman. Tebow did it three times — 32 passing and 23 rushing in his Heisman season of 2007; 30 passing and 12 running in 2008; and 21 passing and 14 running in 2009. Newton had 30 passing and 20 rushing in winning the Heisman and a national championship in 2010.

Klein, who at 6 feet 5, 226 pounds is a load to tackle, passed for 210 yards and a touchdown and ran for 71 yards and three touchdowns in a 52-13 win over Miami on Saturday. He has six touchdowns this season — three passing and three running.

Klein and Kansas State (2-0) have a showdown at No. 5 Oklahoma in two weeks.

55-0 push

The rout-in-waiting that had Savannah State visiting Florida State drew plenty of attention in Las Vegas this week after oddsmakers made the sixth-ranked Seminoles a record 69.5-point favorite.

Well, Florida State seemed well on its way to beating that spread, but nobody ended up winning — or losing.

Harsh weather forced the game to be stopped early in the third quarter — short off the 55-minute mark that most Las Vegas books, by rules, consider a complete game. Therefore, bettors were due a complete refund.

Say what?

“I don’t want to say we’re not a good team. But we’re not.” That’s Ohio State Coach Urban Meyer after the Buckeyes’ 31-16 win over Central Florida.

Directionally challenged

The Big East Conference will continue under that name, Commissioner Mike Aresco said.

There had been speculation otherwise, based largely on new conference members such as Memphis, Central Florida, Houston, Southern Methodist, Boise State and San Diego State.

Whatever the name of the conference, we love the idea of the divisions being Sunrise and Sunset.

Just for kicks

The Atlantic Coast Conference record for longest field goal now belongs to a punter. Spencer Benton of Clemson kicked a 61-yard field goal as time expired at halftime of a 52-27 win over Ball State.

Benton has a stronger leg than Chandler Catanzaro, who handles point-after conversions and shorter field goal tries for the Tigers. Benton, a senior, came into the game having made one of two field goals and five of nine PATs in his career.

His kick was one yard beyond the previous ACC record established by Gary Cismesia of Florida State in 2007. The NCAA record for distance is 67 yards by Russell Erxleben of Texas and Steve Little of Arkansas in 1977 and Joe Williams of Wichita State in 1978.

Benton’s longest punt this year is 46 yards.

Somber news

Tulane safety Devon Walker was at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, Okla., after sustaining a fractured spine in a head-to-neck collision with a teammate.

Walker and defensive tackle Julius Warmsley converged on Tulsa’s Willie Carter from opposite sides, with Warmsley’s helmet connecting with Walker’s helmet and neck.

Walker rolled over and appeared motionless. There were reports that he required CPR because he stopped breathing and lost consciousness, but medical personnel later said neither happened and his life was never in danger.

The game was delayed about 45 minutes. Walker is expected to undergo spinal surgery in the next day or two.

One-liners

Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, happy to be facing a defense other than Alabama’s, ran for 218 yards and passed for 208 in a 31-25 win over Air Force, becoming the first player since 1996 to run and pass for more than 200 yards in a game three times in his college career.... The campuses of Washington State and Eastern Washington are only about 60 miles apart, but Saturday’s was the first football game between the schools since Washington State won, 73-0, in 1908.... Before Mississippi State’s 28-10 win over Auburn, the Bulldogs had not won a Southeastern Conference opener since 1999 and were 0-12 under Coach Dan Mullen against Alabama, Louisiana State, Arkansas and Auburn — the top teams in the SEC’s Western Division.
