Here’s another singles list that includes Derek Jeter
Derek Jeter led the major leagues in hits in 1999, ahead of B.J. Surhoff, Luis Gonzalez, Doug Glanville, Bernie Williams and Randy Velarde. All of those other guys vanished from the majors between 2002 and 2008.
Jeter, the iconic New York Yankees shortstop, is going strong at 38. He could lead the majors in hits for the second time, with a younger cast chasing him — in order, Miguel Cabrera, Andrew McCutchen, Adrian Beltre, Alex Gordon and Billy Butler.
Jeter ranks 12th on the all-time hit list and sixth on the all-time singles list. Pete Rose ranks first and Ty Cobb second on both lists, but here is a look at the relatively obscure all-time singles list, on which Jeter could move into the top three before his retirement and subsequent Hall of Fame induction:
1. Pete Rose (1963-86); 3,215
2. Ty Cobb (1905-28); 3,053
3. Eddie Collins (1906-30); 2,643
4. Cap Anson (1871-97); 2,614
5. Willie Keeler (1892-1910); 2,513
6. Jeter (1995-present); 2,434 (through Friday)
7. Honus Wagner (1897-1917); 2,424
8. Rod Carew (1967-85); 2,404
9. Tris Speaker (1907-28); 2,383
10. Tony Gwynn (1982-2001); 2,378
