Statement says Jonathan Vilma placed $10,000 bounty on Brett Favre

The NFL presented Jonathan Vilma and his attorney with a sworn statement from former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams saying the linebacker placed a $10,000 bounty on Brett Favre.

Vilma met with Commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday in New York about his suspension, which has been temporarily lifted. Attorney Peter Ginsberg said they were given an affidavit at the meeting.

“What Gregg Williams said in his most recent affidavit is the same falsity he has previously provided,” Ginsberg said.

“I don’t know what Gregg Williams’ motives are, but I do know that any suggestion by Williams that Jonathan put up $10,000 as an incentive for his teammates to injure another player is absolutely false.”

Vilma tweeted Monday night that Williams was “bullied to sign the affidavit,” saying Williams signed it Friday.

Williams is now with St. Louis, though he has been suspended indefinitely. An associate of his said Williams did not want to talk to the media.

Vilma, who denied in court that he offered money in exchange for injuring the former Vikings quarterback, was one of four players suspended by Goodell in the bounty scandal.

“Today everyone was afforded an opportunity to start over,” Vilma said outside the NFL’s Park Avenue offices more than three hours after he went in. “It was in our best interest to meet today. We spoke truthfully, honestly, bluntly.”

Redskins lose Orakpo, Carriker

The early glow from Robert Griffin III’s fast start faded quickly for the Washington Redskins on Monday when defensive starters Brian Orakpo and Adam Carriker were declared out for the season.

Two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Orakpo tore the pectoral muscle near his left shoulder, and defensive end Carriker tore the quad tendon in his right knee in the first quarter of Sunday’s 31-28 loss to the St. Louis Rams.

Orakpo had surgery on the same shoulder after suffering a tear in the final game of last season, then damaged some scar tissue in the shoulder during a preseason game last month.

Coach Mike Shanahan said the latest tear is in a different part of the muscle. Orakpo will have surgery and require four months of recovery time.

Carriker was hurt on the Rams’ second offensive play and did not return. The fifth-year veteran, who had 5 1/2 sacks a year ago, will require five months of rehabilitation after his surgery.

Bears’ Moore criticizes Cutler

Seven sacks. Four interceptions. Shoving one of his offensive linemen.

The last game was a forgettable one for Chicago’s Jay Cutler. With the Bears preparing for Sunday’s home game against the St. Louis Rams, players by and large attempted to put Cutler’s shove of left tackle J’Marcus Webb and their quarterback’s controversial postgame comments in the past.

However, not all of them did.

“I think it’s just wrong, though, honestly,” defensive back D.J. Moore said. “I would feel the same kind of way if he was to do me like that. It would make it seem like, well, the reason I’m having a bad game is because it’s what you’re doing and not me taking accountability for myself because I’m throwing these type of passes or doing this type of read. So it’s just a tough situation.”

The Bears lost to Green Bay, 23-10, on Thursday. Cutler appeared upset over a lack of pass blocking Thursday when he shoved Webb, who declined to comment on the situation as he left the practice field Monday. Cutler did not talk with reporters.

Darrelle Revis is feeling better these days, recovering from the concussion that sidelined him Sunday. The New York Jets’ All-Pro cornerback still isn’t sure, though, whether he’ll be back in uniform for the team’s next game at Miami.

Tackle David Diehl, running back Ahmad Bradshaw and wide receiver Domenik Hixon were among six Giants held out of practice Monday. Diehl suffered an injury to the medial collateral ligament in his right knee in Sunday’s 41-34 win over Tampa Bay and might be the most questionable player for the Giants’ next game, against Carolina on Thursday.

New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick says he doesn’t know how long tight end Aaron Hernandez will be sidelined with a right ankle injury.

St. Louis Rams offensive tackle Rodger Saffold will be out at least a month because of a right knee injury. Coach Jeff Fisher said Monday that Saffold has a third-degree medial collateral ligament sprain and other damage to the knee, but said it was not season-ending.

Cleveland tight end Alex Smith was briefly hospitalized with a concussion following Sunday’s loss in Cincinnati. Smith was injured in the fourth quarter after he caught a short pass over the middle and was struck in the head by the knee of a Bengals tackler. The Browns said Smith is listed as day to day.

Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd has a swollen right foot, but is not expected to miss any playing time.
