Angels fighting long odds and ugly weather

ARLINGTON, Texas — The odds are against the Angels, and now Mother Nature might be too.

The Angels entered play Friday two games out of a playoff spot, with six to play. Their weekend series in Texas could be interrupted by rain, forcing the Angels into what Manager Mike Scioscia called “a worst-case scenario.”

Thundershowers are in the forecast Friday night and steady rain Saturday. A postponement either day could force a doubleheader Sunday, an unsettling proposition for a team with a leaky bullpen.

What concerns the Angels most is that they could lose a starting pitcher to a rain delay. In May, a game was interrupted by rain in the first inning, and the Angels did not bring back starter C.J. Wilson after a two-hour delay.

Jered Weaver, the Angels’ ace, is the scheduled starter Friday.

Scioscia said he hoped that the Angels and Rangers could agree on the most favorable weather window in which to start a game. He had little interest in discussing plans for a potential doubleheader.

“Let’s not talk about a worst-case scenario,” Scioscia said. “That would be something that certainly wouldn’t be favorable to what we’re trying to do.”
