Ducks acquire center Matthew Lombardi on dull deadline day

The Ducks acquired center Matthew Lombardi from the Phoenix Coyotes for left wing Brandon McMillan on Wednesday, a deal completed shortly before the NHL’s noon Pacific time trade deadline.

The Kings made no trades on Wednesday. They made their big move on Monday when they acquired defenseman Robyn Regehr from the Buffalo Sabres for second-round draft picks in 2014 and 2015. Regehr passed the necessary medical exams and practiced with the Kings for the first time on Wednesday. They also traded spare defenseman Davis Drewiske to Montreal on Tuesday for a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft.

The Ducks also traded goaltender Jeff Deslauriers to Minnesota for future considerations. Deslauriers had played for both Fort Wayne of the ECHL and Norfolk of the AHL this season. He made four appearances with the Ducks last season and was 3-1-0 with a 2.74 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage.

Lombardi, 31, has a contract that will expire after this season. He had four goals and eight points in 21 games with the Coyotes, including a goal in their 3-1 victory over the Kings on Tuesday night at Jobing.com Arena.

The Ducks wanted a center for depth and Lombardi fit the role at a minimal cost. McMillan, chosen 85th overall by the Ducks in the 2008 entry draft, had 11 goals and 26 points in 91 NHL games over three seasons. He was playing for their American Hockey League affiliate in Norfolk, Va.

A few big names did change teams on Wednesday but the magnitude of the deals didn’t match the trades made in the last 10 days or so, when Regehr, Jay Bouwmeester, Jarome Iginla, Jaromir Jagr, Brenden Morrow and others found new homes.

Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo was not traded, despite reports the Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs had been trying to negotiate a deal. Luongo, who has nine years left on a 12-year contract that carries a cap hit of $5.3 million a year through the 2021-22 season, told Vancouver reporters the size of the contract prevented other teams from acquiring him. “I’d scrap it if I could right now,” he said.

Calgary goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff declined to waive his no-trade clause and stayed with the Flames. He has said he intends to retire after this season.

In some of Wednesday’s biggest moves, the New York Rangers traded right wing Marian Gaborik to Columbus for injured right wing Derek Dorsett, center Derek Brassard and defenseman John Moore. Gaborik scored 41 goals last season for the Rangers but had fallen into the doghouse of Rangers Coach John Tortorella. The Blue Jackets have been playing well recently and are challenging for a playoff spot in the West.

The Sabres traded their captain, Jason Pominville, and a fourth-round draft pick in 2014 to Minnesota for prospects Johan Larsson and Matt Hackett as well as a first-round pick in the June entry draft and a second-round pick in 2014.

The Coyotes traded forward Raffi Torres to San Jose for a third-round pick and sent forward Steve Sullivan -- whom they honored on Tuesday for playing his 1,000th NHL game -- to New Jersey for a seventh-round pick.

Also, Ottawa sent goaltender Ben Bishop to Tampa Bay for Cory Conacher, and the wobbling Philadelphia Flyers acquired goalie Steve Mason from Columbus for Michael Leighton and a third-round pick in 2015.
