Yale, Quinnipiac reach NCAA men’s ice hockey final

Andrew Miller scored 6 minutes 59 seconds into overtime to lift Yale to a 3-2 victory over Massachusetts Lowell in the NCAA men’s hockey semifinals at Pittsburgh.

The senior captain raced around a pair of River Hawks defenders, then slipped a backhand shot between the legs of goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. The Bulldogs (21-12-3) will play rival Quinnipiac in the final Saturday.

Yale’s Jeff Malcolm made 16 saves but didn’t even see a shot in overtime as the Bulldogs buzzed Hellebuyck before Miller broke through.

In the other semifinal, Quinnipiac jumped to an early lead and cruised past St. Cloud State, 4-1.

Jordan Samuels-Thomas had a goal and an assist for the top-seeded Bobcats, and Ben Arnt, Kellen Jones and Jeremy Langlois also scored for Quinnipiac (30-7-5).

Ryan Faragher made 24 saves for the Huskies but was overwhelmed in the first period as Quinnipiac scored three times in the first 12 minutes to grab control.

Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis beat second-seeded Tommy Haas of Germany, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships at Houston.

Berankis, ranked 77th in the world, will face fifth-seeded John Isner, a 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (3) winner over fellow American Jack Sock.

Top-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain overcame a slow start to beat Gael Monfils of France, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Fourth-seeded Sam Querrey, the top American in the world at No. 20, withdrew because of a strained chest muscle.

Second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa advanced to the quarterfinals of the Grand Prix Hassan II, beating Spanish qualifier Pablo Carreno-Busta, 6-3, 6-3, at Casablanca, Morocco.

Anderson will play eighth-seeded Grega Zemlja of Slovenia.
