Derek Jeter out until after All-Star break, Yankees GM says

Derek Jeter, the New York Yankees’ venerable captain, will not make his return this season before the All-Star break after another examination Thursday revealed a new fracture in his injured left ankle.

Jeter, who injured the ankle in October against the Detroit Tigers during the American League Championship Series, was reexamined by Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, N.C., who performed surgery last fall and discovered the new fracture.

“They did a new CT scan which revealed a small crack in the area of the previous injury, so we have to back off and let that heal,” Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said before New York played Arizona. “This is obviously a setback. In terms of speculating on when we might see Derek back with us, we’d be looking at some time after the All-Star break.”

Cashman said the 38-year-old team captain will not need another surgery and that Anderson said that “95% of the people that have this, they come back from it fine. You just have to back off.”

“Clearly he hasn’t done anything wrong,” Cashman added. “He wasn’t cleared for the baseball activities and cleared to play until he had 100% healing, so this is a new fracture, but a small one. That’s I guess the only good part. They kept saying the word small. But it’s a setback, so it’s not a good situation.”

The Yankees, who have won three in a row to improve to 8-5 this season and in second place in the tough AL East Division, have dealt with a number of injuries to star players, including first baseman Mark Teixeira (wrist), third baseman Alex Rodriguez (hip) and outfielder Curtis Granderson (arm).
