NHL playoffs first look: Ducks and Red Wings are familiar foes

No. 2 Anaheim (30-12-6) vs. No. 7 Detroit (24-16-8)

Hockey philosopher/legend Teemu Selanne of the Ducks cut to the chase when he summed up a playoff series against a frequent opponent. “History is repeating,” Selanne said Sunday. Detroit, again, naturally. The Ducks and the Red Wings will be meeting for the sixth time in the playoffs; Detroit has won three times, including the last meeting in 2009. Of note, the home team failed to win in each of the three meetings between the clubs in this shortened regular season. On Feb. 15, the Ducks beat the Red Wings, 5-2, marking their first win in Detroit during the regular season in five years. The Red Wings swept both games in Anaheim, two games in the span of three days in late March, outscoring the Ducks, 7-2, including a fight-filled affair March 22.

Top scorers

Ducks: Ryan Getzlaf 15 goals, 49 points; Corey Perry 15 goals, 36 points; Bobby Ryan 11 goals, 30 points.

Red Wings: Pavel Datsyuk 15 goals, 49 points; Henrik Zetterberg 11 goals, 48 points; Johan Franzen 14 goals, 31 points.

Goaltenders

Ducks: Jonas Hiller 15-6-4, 2.36 goals-against average, .913 save percentage. Viktor Fasth 15-6-2, 2.18 goals-against average, .921 save percentage. Fasth had four shutouts in his first NHL season.

Red Wings: Jimmy Howard 21-13-7, 2.13 goals-against average, .923 save percentage. Of his five shutouts this season, three came in the last two weeks of the season with a playoff spot on the line. His career record against the Ducks is 9-3-1.

Penalty kill

Ducks: 81.5% (13th); Red Wings: 81.7% (12th).

Power play

Ducks: 21.5% (fourth); Red Wings: 18.4% (15th).

Worth noting

Ducks: Only two teams managed to have two goalies winning 15 games or more, the No. 1 Blackhawks and the Ducks. Chicago’s Corey Crawford won 19 and his backup Ray Emery had 17 wins. For the Ducks, Hiller and Fasth each won 15 games. The Ducks had their best winning (points) percentage in club history, at .688, and finished third overall in the NHL, behind Chicago and Pittsburgh, the highest finish in franchise history.

Red Wings: Seemingly, the gifted duo of Zetterberg and Datsyuk flicked the switch at will, at the right time. With Detroit facing playoff elimination, they combined for 18 points in the final four games of the season. In fact, Datsyuk had eight points in the last three games, including assists on all three goals in the finale against Dallas. In the 2009 Western Conference semifinals against the Ducks, Datsyuk failed to score in the seven-game series (won by the Red Wings) and was held to three assists.

Last time in the playoffs

Ducks: 2011. They lost to Nashville in the first round in six games.

Red Wings: 2012. They lost to the Predators in the first round in five games.
