Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones tweeted Sunday that a fan in San Francisco threw a banana at him in the outfield during the Orioles’ 10-2 win over the Giants that afternoon.

Jones is African American. As ESPN.com points out, throwing a banana in the direction of a black player is considered a racist action and has occurred in other sports such as the NHL and European hockey.

Giants senior director of media relations Jim Moorehead told the Baltimore Sun on Sunday night that the team hadn’t received reports of such an incident but added that stadium security cameras would be reviewed on Monday.

Jones drove in four runs during the game and had a three-run home run in the top of the ninth. It was in the bottom of that inning, he alleges, that the incident took place.

Two hours after his initial post, which used some salty language, Jones followed with this tweet:

I love how some ppl are defending the actions by someone today. Shows how u really are also. All good wit me. I just #StayHungry — Adam Jones (@SimplyAJ10) August 12, 2013

Jones is known to be one of the most active Twitter users in Major League Baseball. He has more than 130,000 followers after picking up some 2,000 overnight.

They all might soon be disappointed though following Sunday’s events.

Good chance this means I get off social media soon — Adam Jones (@SimplyAJ10) August 12, 2013

Or maybe not. Jones seemed to be ready to move on to more light-hearted topics at the time of his most recent tweet four hours later.
