UCLA’s Myles Jack is chosen Pac-12 freshman of the year — twice over

Everybody in the Pac-12 Conference knew Myles Jack was double trouble. Now it’s official.

UCLA’s star linebacker-turned-running-back has been chosen freshman defensive player of the year in the Pac-12. And also freshman offensive player of the year.

Jack, who came to UCLA as a linebacker, doubled as a running back in the Bruins’ last four games and ran for seven touchdowns and 267 yards, averaging 7.2 yards per carry. On defense, he made 70 tackles. He clinched a 34-27 victory over Utah by intercepting a pass at the five-yard line with 16 seconds left.

Jack was chosen second-team all-conference as a linebacker.

USC had three players selected to the first team in voting by Pac-12 head coaches. UCLA had two.

Center Marcus Martin, defensive lineman Leonard Williams and special teams standout Soma Vainuku were USC’s first-team selections. UCLA’s were offensive lineman Xavier Su’a-Filo and linebacker Anthony Barr.

USC defensive back Dion Bailey, linebacker Hayes Pullard and defensive lineman Devon Kennard were second-team choices on defense. UCLA’s Ryan Hofmeister was a second-team pick on special teams.

Arizona running back Ka’Deem Carey was offensive player of the year. Arizona State defensive lineman Will Sutton was defensive player of the year. Arizona State’s Todd Graham was coach of the year.
