Andy Reid on verge of becoming coach of Kansas City Chiefs

Andy Reid is on the verge of becoming the new coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, according to an ESPN report citing unnamed league sources.

The report said there are still minor details to work out but that Reid and Chiefs officials met for nine hours Wednesday at a private airport in the Philadelphia area and that “the major issues have been discussed and agreed upon.”

Reid had been scheduled to talk to the Arizona Cardinals about their coaching vacancy.

There are enticing aspects to the Chiefs, among them the fact they have the No. 1 pick in April’s draft and have some of the pieces in place to make a turnaround.

Reid has a track record of developing quarterbacks, and would be able to get one either through the draft or free agency, with players such as San Francisco’s Alex Smith and Seattle’s Matt Flynn potentially hitting the open market.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Reid were to bring along Tom Heckert, his former personnel man in Philadelphia who was fired this week as general manager in Cleveland.

Considering Reid’s history of having near-full control of the Eagles’ front office, hiring him would mean a dramatically different role for Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli, although that change was in the works anyway.
