Promoter: Mayweather Jr. ‘100%’ on May 4 Vegas card

Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s return to the ring May 4 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas remains in negotiation, with Robert Guerrero the most likely opponent and an official announcement expected by the Super Bowl, the man negotiating the bout said.

Richard Schaefer, the Golden Boy Promotions chief executive who’s helped promote all of Mayweather’s fights since 2007, said Thursday, “I know 100% that Floyd will be on that [May 4] card. Floyd is very clear he wants that.”

Mayweather (43-0, 26 knockouts) last fought in May, defeating Miguel Cotto by unanimous decision. He endured jail time during the summer over a domestic violence case but has said he wants to fight twice this year: on Cinco de Mayo weekend and Mexican Independence Day weekend in September.

While nothing is signed yet, according to Schaefer, Guerrero, 29, emerged as the opponent in the World Boxing Council welterweight title fight by knocking down former welterweight champion Andre Berto twice in a gripping Nov. 24 bout that Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) won by decision in Ontario.

Schaefer would only say he’s made “a lot of progress” on the deal and is “working on this diligently.”

The promoter said the May 4 card could very well also include a super-welterweight title defense by young Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

“Is that what I would like to see? Yes,” Schaefer said. “Can I deliver? Or is it wishful thinking? Both of these guys can do their own pay-per-view. This has been extremely difficult. It’s high stakes.”

The list of possible Alvarez opponents includes James Kirkland, International Boxing Federation champion Cornelius “K9” Bundrage, Alfredo Angulo and World Boxing Assn. champion Austin Trout.

Schaefer added he’ll depart for Europe next week to discuss an April fight for England’s former junior-welterweight world champion Amir Khan, who dominated Carlos Molina in a technical knockout Dec. 15 at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

Khan is penciled in for an April 13 or April 20 junior-welterweight fight at Staples Center, possibly against Riverside’s Josesito Lopez, who broke former world welterweight champion Victor Ortiz’s jaw in a bout there in June.

“That’s a fight fans would want,” Schaefer said. “No one is saying, ‘Oh, that’d be boring.’ It’d be impossible for that to be a bad fight.”

For April 27, Schaefer is close to finalizing a world welterweight title fight between champion Paulie Malignaggi and Pomona’s Shane Mosley at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

“It’s a very interesting fight,” Schaefer said of a bout that would bring Mosley out of retirement. “People might say, ‘Oh, Shane Mosley, he’s old,’ but if you ask them who’ll win the fight, they think, yes, Mosley can win. He deserves that last chance to get a title after entertaining us for so long.”

Schaefer also said he anticipates that Ortiz will return to the ring in May.
