NBA suspends Carmelo Anthony one game for postgame actions

Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony will serve a one-game suspension Thursday for his postgame antics Monday, when he waited near the Celtics’ team bus in an attempt to confront power forward Kevin Garnett.

Anthony and Garnett got into an altercation Monday in the fourth quarter of their game, which Boston won, 102-96. Anthony reportedly was upset with Garnett’s choice of words during an on-court disagreement.

The Knicks’ All-Star forward, who was caught on video waiting by Boston’s bus while security members and Coach Mike Woodson intervened, said he wasn’t waiting to fight Garnett but wanted to talk to him.

“There’s certain things that you just don’t say to men, another man,” Anthony said Tuesday, although he didn’t elaborate on Garnett’s comments.

The NBA didn’t care about Garnett’s choice of words. The league did not condone Anthony’s behavior, which included him trying to confront Garnett in an arena tunnel and near the Celtics’ locker room as well as by the team’s bus.

“There are no circumstances in which it is acceptable for a player to confront an opponent after a game,” wrote Stu Jackson, NBA executive vice president of operations, in a statement Wednesday. “Carmelo Anthony attempted to engage with Kevin Garnett multiple times after Monday’s game and therefore a suspension was warranted.”

The Knicks play the Pacers on Thursday in Indianapolis. Anthony will be docked about $175,000 of his $19.4-million salary.
