Lance Armstrong to talk about family and sponsors Friday night

Share

The second half of Lance Armstrong’s much-anticipated interview with Oprah Winfrey airs Friday night with the disgraced cyclist scheduled to discuss a range of topics about his life outside of cycling.

Armstrong admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs throughout his competitive career during the first portion of the interview Thursday night. Winfrey asked him why he chose to reveal the truth now, after years of vehement denials.

“I don’t know that I have a great answer,” he responded. “I will start my answer by saying this is too late.”

Clips from tonight’s segment, provided by the OWN network, which is broadcasting the interview at 9 p.m., show Armstrong talking about how his children and mother have reacted to confirmation of his systematic doping.

Armstrong is also expected to answer questions about his relationship with the Livestrong Foundation. He founded the cancer-fighting organization but recently stepped down as a board member.

Yet another clip has Armstrong discussing the millions of dollars he lost when sponsors split with him after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency released a condemning report that included depositions from former cycling teammates.

On Friday, reaction to the first part of the interview included a large degree of skepticism from those who wonder whether Armstrong’s sincerity can be trusted after he lied to the public for so long.

“He wasn’t crying at all,” said Scott Allison, a psychology professor at the University of Richmond and co-author of the 2011 book, “Heroes: What They Do and Why We Need Them.”

“He wasn’t playing the role of someone who was feeling nearly as much pain as [some people] believe he should be,” Allison added.
