Randy Moss still thinks he’s best, no matter what Jerry Rice says

A day after declaring himself the greatest receiver ever, Randy Moss did not back down from his statements -- even if they did seem to upset the all-time leader in most statistical categories at the position.

“What I said is what I felt, and I don’t want to get into a shouting match with Jerry Rice or anybody,” Moss said as the San Francisco 49ers, preparing for Sunday’s Super Bowl, met the media on Wednesday. “It’s my personal opinion. [Rice] has the numbers but I don’t believe in numbers.”

Moss was essentially repeating the viewpoint he expressed to reporters Tuesday: “I don’t really live on numbers. I really live on impact and what you’re able to do out on that field, so I really do think I’m the greatest receiver ever to play this game.”

Now an ESPN analyst, Rice had an opportunity to respond to Moss’ comments Tuesday on the air.

“I impacted the game by winning Super Bowls,” Rice said while flashing one of the three championship rings he won with the 49ers. “Randy is still trying and I wish him the best, but I was very surprised that he said he’s the best receiver to ever play the game. I leave that up to my fans to make that statement.”

Moss, who will be making his second attempt at earning a Super Bowl ring of his own when the 49ers play the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, said it sounded like just more numbers talk to him.

“In today’s society, it’s how we measure athletes or teams -- on rings,” Moss said. “I don’t base it that way. I changed the game. But I’m not trying to make it all about me.”

A little late for that -- this is the most we’ve talked about Moss all season.
