Martina Hingis enters doubles for Southern California Open

Martina Hingis, recently inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, announced Tuesday that she will play doubles with Daniela Hantuchova at the Southern California Open at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad.

Hingis, 32, won the singles and doubles event at La Costa in 1997 and the singles in 1999. This will be her first WTA tournament appearance since September 2007. She was once ranked No. 1 in the world and won five Grand Slam singles titles and 43 career WTA singles titles. She also won nine Grand Slam doubles championships.

“We are honored to have such a great champion of the game choose to make the Southern California Open her first tournament back on tour,” said Alastair Garland, director of the tournament, to be held July 27-Aug. 4. “Having just been inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame, it will be a true treat for the fans to enjoy watching Martina play doubles.”

The stars of the singles draw will be third-ranked Victoria Azarenka and newly crowned Wimbledon singles champion Marion Bartoli.
