Angels-Red Sox rained out; split doubleheader set for Saturday

BOSTON — The opener of a three-game series between the Angels and Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park on Friday night was declared rained out some six hours before first pitch. The game has been rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader Saturday, with games scheduled for 10 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. PDT.

It has been raining steadily in Boston since the early morning, and the forecast calls for a 100% chance of heavy rain Friday night. The forecast Saturday calls for rain in the morning and partly cloudy with a chance of more rain in the afternoon.

Tommy Hanson, C.J. Wilson and Joe Blanton were scheduled to pitch for the Angels, who have lost five of their last six games, but with Jerome Williams, who was recently bumped from the rotation to the bullpen, available, the Angels should be able to absorb the doubleheader from a starting-pitching standpoint.

The Angels could stick with their original rotation and start Hanson and Wilson on Saturday, Blanton on Sunday and use Jered Weaver, Jason Vargas and Williams in a three-game series at Baltimore beginning Monday night.

Or, they could start Williams along with Hanson or Wilson in the doubleheader Saturday and push the other pitchers back a day to cover the rest of the road trip.
