Galaxy acquires veteran Pablo Mastroeni from Colorado Rapids
The Galaxy acquired veteran midfielder Pablo Mastroeni, a six-time Major League Soccer All-Star, from the Colorado Rapids.
In the deal announced Monday, the Galaxy also received the rights to midfielder Baggio Husidic, who’s currently playing with Hammarby IF in Sweden.
In exchange, Colorado received an additional international roster slot through the end of the 2014 MLS season and a second-round pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.
Mastroeni, 36, would be eligible to make his Galaxy debut Wednesday night when the club plays the Portland Timbers at StubHub Center in Carson.
Mastroeni had spent the last 11-plus seasons with the Rapids, and was the team’s most valuable player in 2007, 2008 and 2010.
He led Colorado to its first MLS championship in 2010 and holds team records for games and minutes played.
Born in Argentina, Mastroeni became a U.S. citizen in 2001 and also made 65 appearances with the U.S. national team from 2001 to 2009, which included playing at the World Cup in 2002 and 2006.
Most of Mastroeni’s appearances came while playing for Galaxy Head Coach Bruce Arena, who coached the U.S. team from 1998 to 2006.
