USC, Notre Dame agree to extend football rivalry through 2023
The USC and Notre Dame football rivalry will continue for at least another decade, which will put the yearly tradition just shy of its 100th birthday.
The Trojans and Fighting Irish have agreed to extend their football series through the 2023 season, USC announced Wednesday, continuing a tradition that started in 1926 and has taken place every year since with the exception of 1943-45.
The Irish lead the series, 44-35-5.
USC will continue hosting the games on Thanksgiving weekend on even-numbered years, with the Irish playing host in mid-October during odd-numbered years.
Other scheduling items include a three-game series with BYU starting later this decade and home games against Idaho and Arkansas State in 2015 and New Mexico in 2016.
The Trojans will also start a three-game series with BYU, starting on the road on Sept. 14, 2019, followed by home games on Thanksgiving weekend in 2012 (Nov. 27) and 2023 (Nov. 25).
“Not only are we pleased to be able to extend our storied series with Notre Dame, but we were able to keep the game on the traditional dates of Thanksgiving weekend in Los Angeles and mid-October in South Bend,” USC Athletic Director Pat Haden said. “Adding the series with BYU, which is a great matchup for the fans of both teams and for all college football fans, helped us in that regard.”
USC will open the 2015 season by hosting Arkansas State on Sept. 5 in the first meeting between the two schools, followed by another home game against Idaho on Sept. 12.
The Trojans will host another first-time opponent, New Mexico, at the start of the 2016 season (Sept. 3).
