Offense breaks out against Brewers

MILWAUKEE — The Dodgers matched their highest run total of the season in a 9-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday at Miller Park, but Manager Don Mattingly didn’t sound convinced it had anything to do with his benching of Andre Ethier.

“Meh,” Mattingly said. “We got the runs, we made the plays.”

While Mattingly said before the game that he wanted his team to be mentally tougher, he didn’t raise the issue in the clubhouse.

Adrian Gonzalez said he didn’t know Ethier was out of the lineup until about an hour before the game. Gonzalez also said he was unaware of Mattingly’s comments.

The Dodgers’ offensive breakout probably was a result of facing Brewers starter Wily Peralta, who entered the game with a 5.94 earned-run average. Peralta lived up to his reputation in a start that lasted only 1 2/3 innings, as he was charged with six runs (four earned) and seven hits.

Meanwhile, Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched into the eighth inning for the first time, as he held the Brewers to two runs and six hits over 7 1/3 innings.

“The team gave me the lead, so I was comfortable,” said Ryu, who improved to 5-2.

The Dodgers went ahead, 1-0, in the first inning when Matt Kemp singled in Carl Crawford. They extended the lead to 6-0 in the second inning, which included a two-run single by Crawford, a run-scoring error by Brewers shortstop Jean Segura, and bases-loaded walks by Scott Van Slyke and Nick Punto.

Ramon Hernandez, who last appeared in a game May 7, hit a home run to increase the margin to 7-0. Hernandez was two for three, raising his average from .045 to .120.

The Dodgers have had internal discussions about calling up their top two prospects, double-A outfielders Yasiel Puig and Joc Pederson, according to Mattingly.

Puig, who batted .517 in major league spring training camp, is hitting .314 with six home runs and 24 runs batted in. Pederson, a former 11th-round pick who might have passed Puig on the organizational depth chart, is batting .327 with eight home runs and 20 RBIs.

General Manager Ned Colletti is scheduled to watch both players in Chattanooga on Thursday. However, neither player appears to be close to being promoted to the major leagues, as Mattingly pointed out that fast-tracking shortstop Dee Gordon probably hindered his development.

Short hops

Kemp announced he would donate $250,000 to his home state of Oklahoma, which was hit by a devastating tornado Monday. Kemp said he would also donate $1,000 for every home run he hits before the All-Star break. ... The Dodgers have sold approximately 48,000 tickets for Hall of Fame broadcaster Jaime Jarrin’s bobblehead night Saturday. The first 50,000 at Dodger Stadium that night will receive Jarrin’s bobblehead doll.
