New York Yankees give Joe Girardi four more years

Joe Girardi accepted a four-year contract to remain as manager of the New York Yankees, the team announced Wednesday.

The contract guarantees him $16 million, according to CBS Sports.

Mike Scioscia of the Angels, the highest-paid manager in Major League Baseball, averages $5 million a year on a contract that extends through 2017.

The Dodgers have made no announcement about the future of Manager Don Mattingly, whose option for next season has not been exercised. However, with this week’s announcements that Scioscia would return to the Angels and Girardi to the Yankees, two high-profile potential replacements are no longer available.

In addition, Mattingly guided the Dodgers to a victory in the National League division series, defusing the possibility he could be dismissed because he failed to get the team with the highest payroll in baseball history out of the first round.

The Dodgers open the National League Championship Series on Friday, against the winner of Wednesday’s NLDS Game 5 between the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals.
