America’s Cup postponed by high winds

Oracle Team USA will live to see another day of America’s Cup racing, if only because high winds caused the postponement of competition on Tuesday.

Officials sent the American boat and its challenger, Emirates Team New Zealand, back to the docks after several delays on the San Francisco Bay.

“I’m concerned about the boats getting home safely,” Regatta Director Iain Murray said. “We have a huge amount of wind along the city front. It’s windy and the current’s getting stronger by the minute.”

Oracle trails in the finals by seven races to one. That means Emirates needs only two more victories to claim the Cup. With two races scheduled, Tuesday could have settled the matter.

But with the troublesome current, and winds exceeding the upper limit of 20.1 knots, officials deemed the conditions too risky.

Racing is scheduled to resume on Wednesday.

“When the front passes tonight, we’ll get back to good racing tomorrow and the rest of the week,” Murray said.
