Michael Schumacher showing ‘moments of consciousness and awakening’

Retired Formula One star Michael Schumacher is showing signs of recovery more than three months after suffering major head injuries in a skiing accident, his manager said Friday.

“Michael is making progress on his way,” manager Sabine Kehm said in a statement. “He shows moments of consciousness and awakening.”

Schumacher, who has more wins (91) and world titles (seven) than anyone in Formula One history, fell while skiing in France on Dec. 29 and remains hospitalized there. He was wearing a helmet when he crashed, but it cracked when he hit his head on a rock.

Doctors weren’t able to remove all the blood clots in his brain because some were too deeply embedded. He was placed in a drug-induced coma, which stabilized his condition, and in January doctors began withdrawing sedatives in an attempt to wake him up.

“We are on his side during his long and difficult fight, together with the team of the hospital in Grenoble, and we keep remaining confident,” Kehm said.

She added that she and Schumacher’s family “do not intend to disclose details. This is necessary to protect the privacy of Michael and his family, and to enable the medical team to work in full calmness.”
