ATHLETICS 3, ANGELS 2

AT THE PLATE: Infielder Grant Green and outfielder Brennan Boesch, in a crowded battle for backup jobs, continued to hit well. Green doubled home one run and has three hits in four at-bats. Boesch had two hits Sunday and has started the exhibition season with four hits in seven at-bats.

ON THE MOUND: Hector Santiago, making his Angels debut, gave up an unearned run and one hit in 2 2/3 innings. Santiago said he threw “six or seven” screwballs per game with the Chicago White Sox last season. If he controls the pitch as well as he did Sunday, he said he might throw as many as 30 in a game.

EXTRA BASES: Reliever Dane De La Rosa struck out three and walked three in one inning, without giving up a run. No Angels pitcher has had such an inning in the regular season since 1984, according to Angels publicist Matt Birch.

UP NEXT: vs. Arizona on Monday at noon PST at Salt River Fields, Scottsdale. On the air: TV: FS West; Radio: 830.
