Baseball report: Padres trade Derek Norris to Nationals

The Washington Nationals have reacquired catcher Derek Norris from the San Diego Padres for minor league right-hander Pedro Avila. Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo announced the trade Friday.

Norris, a 2007 first-round pick of the Nationals, hit .186 with 14 home runs and 42 RBIs last season for San Diego. The 27-year-old is a career .233 hitter in five major league seasons with the Oakland Athletics and Padres.

Washington sent Norris to Oakland for left-hander Gio Gonzalez in 2011. He returns to the Nationals, who avoided arbitration with catcher Jose Lobaton on Thursday.

The St. Louis Cardinals are not tendering a contract for 2017 to right-hander Seth Maness, who had elbow surgery in August. The move makes Maness a free agent. He went 2-2 with a 3.41 ERA in 29 relief appearances this year. … The Washington Nationals did not tender a contract to outfielder Ben Revere, their only arbitration-eligible player. Shortstop Danny Espinosa, outfielder Bryce Harper, third baseman Anthony Rendon and right-handed pitcher Tanner Roark were tendered contracts. … The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a one-year, $2-million deal with left-hander Brian Duensing, who went 1-0 with a 4.05 ERA in 14 relief appearances for the Baltimore Orioles last season. …

The Miami Marlins have offered 2017 contracts to All-Stars Marcell Ozuna and A.J. Ramos, along with four other arbitration-eligible players : right-handers Tom Koehler and David Phelps as well as infielders Adeiny Hechavarria and Derek Dietrich. Ozuna, an outfielder, hit .266 with 23 homers and 76 RBIs this year. Ramos had 40 saves and a 2.81 ERA. … The Atlanta Braves and reserve catcher Anthony Recker have agreed to an $800,000, one-year contract. Atlanta also avoided arbitration with left-hander Paco Rodriguez, who gets a one-year deal. …

The Oakland Athletics have agreed to a $4 million, one-year contract with first baseman Yonder Alonso to avoid salary arbitration. The A’s also announced Friday they have tendered contracts to all remaining players on their roster. … The Texas Rangers have received right-hander pitcher Brady Dragmire on a waiver claim from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Texas also Friday lost left-hander David Rollins to Philadelphia, his fourth team since the World Series. … The Chicago White Sox have agreed to a $3-million, one-year contract with outfielder Avisail Garcia and a $3.5-million, one-year deal with second baseman Brett Lawrie. Chicago also declined to tender a contract for 2017 to right-handed pitcher Blake Smith on Friday.
