Racing! Unique Bella lives up to her first name in romp

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we review an exciting day at Santa Anita.

Quite a day at Santa Anita. Unique Bella crushes the field by nine lengths and our superstar in the making, Ax Man, gets caught up in a speed duel and falters badly.

My colleague Eric Sondheimer was on site Saturday and offers up his report on the racing. To read, just click here.

There was also an upset at Tampa Bay Downs where Catholic Boy came up short in the Sam F. Davis Stakes. Flameaway led the entire way and held off Catholic Boy, who was working hard, but couldn’t gain any ground in deep stretch. Catholic Boy came up ½-length short.

What does allowance/optional claimer mean?

Our handicapping lesson on Saturday raised some questions about a race that is labeled allowance/optional claiming. The comment was “why affix the claim price if the horse was doing great.” The horse in question was Sawyer’s Hill.

Kosta Hronis, a veteran horse owner including Stellar Wind, wanted to weigh in and explain some things about these type of races.

“I wanted to explain the term optional claiming race. For example, Sawyer’s Hill has already won at that level if they want to race back at that level you must be in for the claim.

“It keeps owners/trainers from entering horses below their level just to get a win/purse.

The conditions of the race dictate the optional claiming for each race. If you meet the conditions you are not in for the claim but if you already won that race at a level and want to race in it again you must be eligible for someone to claim your horse.

“This horse, Sawyer Hill, has won at this level already, but is 7 years old and has not raced since last April so a claim is unlikely but you never know who is horse shopping that day. “

Kosta, really appreciate explanation. Weigh in whenever you like. And for the record, Sawyer’s Hill won the nine-horse race and paid $7.20.

View from a NHC first timer

Our own Rob Henie, playing in his first NHC tournament, shared these observations with the subscribers of his two handicapping sheets.

“So [Friday] was Day 1 of the NHC, and while I may be on the upper end from a handicapping knowledge perspective, tournament play is a different “animal” all together. 568 players, chaos, races going off every 30 seconds (not quite, but you get the picture). I've heard many say it's good to get this NHC experience under you, similar to a horse “needing the race,” and they're not kidding. The NTRA does an amazing job, extremely well done, aiding this frenzy of organized mayhem, at least making things a bit more palpable, especially for those walking around like an eight-point buck staring at a Mack semi-truck in the middle of the night.

“I'm proud to say, from the 568 players, there are 13 WCHR/ECHR members in the field (perhaps some of those handicapping lessons have paid off, at least I can hope). As for the leaderboard? Not great, I'm sitting in 335th place, basically right in the middle, but to show how tedious these standings are, I was a head loss and placing one winner on the other entry (having a winner on one entry but not the other, is often just poor luck) away, from sitting in 18th place, yes, that's it. Every head loss kills, and every dollar is crucial.”

Rob didn’t make the semifinals but will likely be back next year.

In fact, there are three women in the top 12. No past champion made the semifinals.

Santa Anita preview

After Saturday’s big card, things relax on Sunday to nine races starting at 12:30. They’ve kept the only stakes race until the end, about 4:45 p.m. It’s the $75,000 Sweet Life Stakes over 6 ½ furlongs down the hill. It’s restricted to 3 year olds.

The 3-1 morning-line favorite is Out Of The Flame, who has to go back seven starts to find a win. It’s probably why he’s a tepid favorite. Flavien Prat is riding the Simon Callaghan filly for the third time.

Ms Bad Behavior is the 7-2 second choice. She beat Out Of The Flame in their last race and has won two of the last three for Richard Baltas.

There are four turf races on the card, the first, fourth, seventh and ninth. The seventh is one of those rare 1 ¼ -mile turf races. It’s an allowance/optional claimer.

The field sizes are OK, in order: 7, 5, 6, 8, 7, 8, 8, 8, 12.

SEVENTH RACE No. 3 Lucy De (3-1)

Hard-knocking mare from the Richard Baltas stable turned in a solid third-place effort in the Astra Stakes last time but drops back into an allowance race at a distance that probably suits her better. Might be hard to find prices today, so let's take her as an exotics “single.”

Saturday Result: Liberty Jack ran out in the 9th race.

Chris Wade’s LA pick of the day

RACE SEVEN: No.1 TWISTED SIFTER (6-1)

Twisted Sifter is a strife finder deluxe who has earned competitive numbers for tonight's seventh race with his previous trouble and track variants factored in. The big bodied gelding draws the inside post, which is where he produced his career's cleanest journey. An expected better start should put the long strider in the mix at the wire at a nice price.

(Note: Don’t worry, Ed Burgart hasn’t gone away, he’s just on vacation.)
