Cardinals’ Carson Palmer ruled out against 49ers

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer remains in concussion protocol and has not been cleared to play Thursday night against the San Francisco 49ers, according to Coach Bruce Arians.

Palmer, who is not making the trip, was injured when his head slammed to the turf on a sack late in Arizona’s 17-13 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

“Carson’s made great progress, but there’s no way I’m going to take any chances with him,” Arians said. “He argued with me a little bit, but he has not cleared.”

Backup Drew Stanton will make the 13th start of his 10-year NFL career but first since 2014. He went 5-3 as a starter that year when Palmer went down with shoulder and knee injuries.

Cam’s concussion

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton missed practice on Wednesday with a concussion, raising concerns about his availability for Monday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He remained in the concussion protocol three days after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit from linebacker Deion Jones in the fourth quarter of a 48-33 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

The team was not required to release an injury report, so there was no official update on Newton’s status.

Costly hit

New York Jets safety Calvin Pryor was fined nearly $25,000 for his tackle of Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin last Sunday, but Pryor plans to appeal it.

The NFL deemed that Pryor struck the head and neck area of Baldwin, who made a 38-yard catch on the play in Seattle’s 27-17 win.

A first offense, for hitting a defenseless player is $24,309 — likely the amount the Jets safety will have to pay the league.

Discipline ahead?

Denver Broncos star cornerback Aquib Talib could still face discipline from the league over the shooting in Dallas last summer in which a bullet pierced his right leg even if he won’t be charged.

WFAA-TV in Dallas reported that detectives determined Talib shot himself on June 5, but that he wouldn’t face any criminal charges in the case.

Dallas police have declined to confirm or deny the report.
