Johnny Manziel gets a warning from judge during court appearance: Don’t contact ex-girlfriend

Johnny Manziel needs to stay away from Colleen Crowley and firearms.

Those were among the conditions laid out by a Dallas judge Thursday for Manziel’s release on $1,500 bond. The former Cleveland Browns quarterback faces a misdemeanor assault charge stemming from an incident involving ex-girlfriend Crowley.

Judge Roberto Canas told the former Heisman Trophy winner that he couldn’t visit, call, email, text or contact Crowley in any other way. Manziel also signed an affidavit stating he doesn’t own firearms and that there aren’t any where he lives.

No plea was entered during the arraignment hearing, which lasted less than 15 minutes, but Manziel’s attorney, Bob Hinton, has said his client will plead not guilty. Next up in the process, Hinton said, is a docket hearing on June 24.

It was Manziel’s first court appearance after being indicted on April 26, days after a grand jury heard the case.

Crowley has accused of Manziel of hitting her several times during an altercation in January. She already has been granted a two-year restraining order against Manziel.

Manziel could receive a maximum punishment of one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.
