Quarterback Malik Zaire was helped off the field late in the third quarter Saturday after he appeared to roll his ankle during No. 9 Notre Dame’s game at Virginia.

Zaire gained 3 yards on the designed run and was helped to the sideline, then taken away in a cart. It was not immediately clear if he would return.

DeShone Kizer replaced him and C.J. Prosise ran 24 yards for a touchdown on the next play. Prosise replaced Tarean Folston, who was knocked out for the season last week with a knee injury.

The touchdown gave the Fighting Irish a 26-14 lead against Virginia and some much needed breathing room.

Zaire was 7 of 18 passing for 115 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown to Will Fuller. He ran 10 times for 87 yards.
